VBS

Vacation Bible School is an engaging summer program where children learn about faith, values, and community in a fun and interactive environment.

Programs include youth camps, adult and family camps, trip and adventure camps, day camps, servant learning events and more.

Sunday School at First Lutheran begins at age three. Celebration Sunday begins the year in September and the Fun Finale closes our session in May. Preschool through 3rd grade uses the Simply Loved curriculum. This curriculum is designed to help kids remember each lesson long after their children’s ministry years. The lesson layout is kept simple to help volunteers teach with ease. 4th and 5th grade use the Be Bold curriculum. Be Bold focuses on some of the harder preteen questions about faith. This curriculum choice helps teachers navigate those waters by facilitating meaningful discussion and Bible exploration. Both curriculums are from Group Publishing.

Our Sunday School program is run by volunteers, and donations help to keep our costs down and our supply cupboards full. Teachers and helpers are sometimes unavailable and in need of someone to fill in for them. If you would like to volunteer or donate to the Sunday School program, please contact the Sunday School Lead Teacher or the Board of Education Chair via the church office at (605)627-9418.

Confirmation Ministry Guidelines

Welcome to our Confirmation Ministry at First Lutheran Church! We believe in nurturing and guiding our youth as they grow in their understanding of the Christian faith and Lutheran doctrine. Our program is designed to equip 7th and 8th-grade students with the knowledge and tools they need to affirm their Baptism and deepen their relationship with God.

Youth Meetings

Our 7th and 8th-grade Youth meet every Wednesday to explore the basics of the Christian faith, the Bible, and Lutheran doctrine. This foundational training prepares them for the significant milestone of affirming their Baptism on the 1st Sunday of May in 8th grade.

Confirmation Guidelines

Biblical Understanding: Catechumens should develop a working knowledge of the Old and New Testament, including the books of the Bible and key faith texts.

The Catechism: Students will delve into the meaning of:

  • The Ten Commandments
  • The Lord’s Prayer
  • The Apostles’ Creed

Worship Life: We encourage regular attendance at Worship and Youth Group meetings throughout the year. Additionally, students are expected to engage in Worship Discussion Guides and participate in family worship, fostering meaningful conversations about faith, prayer, and worship.

Faith Statement: As part of their Christian journey, catechumens will articulate their faith through words and deeds. With guidance from parents and our pastors, 10th-grade students will undertake a faith project or statement, while 8th-grade students will craft a one-page response to key questions about their faith.

Questions include:

  • Who am I?
  • What do I believe?
  • Why does Jesus matter in my life?
  • How do I express my faith?

Involvement in First Lutheran Ministry: Each student is encouraged to actively participate in the ministry of First Lutheran by assisting in worship services and engaging in servant activities throughout the year.

Faithbooking: Through journaling and reflection, students will document their faith journey and personal growth.
